"Dave" by Will Rigby

Will and Peter,

I was playing mp3s, getting nostalgic and decided to drop you a line.

I met you in Charleston, Illinois too many years ago where I was helping "Dave" with your show at the club Roc's. On Sunday, Lou Ann and I threw together a party at her place and when Dave showed up a legend was born. He left that weekend, never to return and I went on to promote and book and manage acts for the next several years.

I now live in Chicago with my wife Patti, three kids and a big yellow dog.

I hope this gave you a chuckle. All the best.
Bob Buehler

Re: "Dave" by Will Rigby

Wow. Hi Bob, i remember you. I wondered if I'd ever come across any of you folks again. I have to say thanks for perhaps the strangest and one of the most fun weekends of my life. I still think often of many of the things that happened in that day and a half. Not all of them are in the song (such as the rednecky guy who knocked on the door of the lake house, and when it was opened immediately said "wan'burn'bowl?"). One person who was there (at the gig, or the party, but not both, I think) later married a friend of ours. There is a verse that I added after the song was recorded:
Flat tire on a gravel road
Gilbert was such a heavy load
Luscious & Brown had him towed.
Gilbert, Wipe Me Mommy's guitar player, went to his reward a few years ago, which adds a melancholy side to the song. The song wrote itself, all I did was make it rhyme. Thanks for checking in, dunno if you're in touch with any of the others in the song but send my regards if you are. Best... Will

Thanks for the note.

Your friend, who's name escapes me, owned a club in NJ. He married Cheryl. They came into Chicago a few years after we all graduated and we all went to see Sleepy LaBeef at Fitzgerald's.

I get to NY a bit for work. I really should look Cheryl up the next time I'm out that way.

After you (and Dave) left town I began promoting. Mostly SST and Slash record artists. The Minutemen, Black Flag, Meat Puppets, Husker Du, Violent Femes, etc. It was a lot of fun but nothing quite like the Wipe Me Mommy weekend.

So sorry to hear about Gilbert.

I had an opportunity to spend time and correspond with D. Boone of the Minutemen until he passed. He'll always stand out to me as being a very caring person and having great character. Your concern for Dave that day makes me think you have that in common. I wish I would have stayed in touch.

I have the Dave 45. It would be awesome if I could procure a digital version. No pressure. Not why I reached out. I also saw somewhere that Yo La Tengo covered it at one of their Hannukah shows. Hysterical! Wish I had seen it.

Again, great to hear from you. Thanks for the memories. All the best!
