black greys

I think some people tend to choose greys different than black ones. Personally I think the black ones look stunning when their coat is well looked after and so shiny. Giving them cod oil makes their fur look smashing.

Re: black greys

Couldn't sgree more Stan. Kell looks most handsome with his glossy black coat, and he won Best In Show at this years GRF Annual Dog Show

Re: black greys

Even with his white spots, Ace looks lovely in the sun with his shiny coat.

Re: black greys

The same thing with black cats...They look so mysterious
People have their own tastes, but the black colour suits nearly everyone. Personally I think it is not the colour that makes greys unusual but their exceptional personality. I like all the variety of colours but personality would determine my choice. Sometimes due to their(greys) past they may pose a challenge for their new owners but making changes, socialising, working on their attitude towards other animals may give lots of extra satisfaction. You may put a lot of improvement in what has been neglected making them happy, socialised and loved by people and other animals (even cats ), hehe

Re: black greys

Yeah I totally agree!!! It's the same all over in the dog world and prob the cat world too.
When I got Bruce (Rab) I asked Celia and Jimmy to give me a dog who would suit my lifestyle and I couldn't have cared less about colour. They showed me Rab (now Bruce) and I fell in love with him instantly. Such a great nature, but being a single female walking a dog on my own I love the fact that he's big and black and very sleek looking, as you say kinda mysterious looking :)

Re: black greys

We know someone who works at SSPCA and he's told us in the past that black dogs seem to be abandoned a lot more than others and are usually more difficult to find homes for. I really can't understand this!
Our Nell and Missie have lovely glossy black coats. Nell's is almost blue in places when the light shines on her. Black hairs are also much easier to deal with. When I get greeted on coming back home, Shandy rubs a load of white hairs onto my black skirt, bless him.

The only thing we need to watch out for is when clipping their claws (which has to be done really, really carefully). With black dogs who have black claws you can't see where the fleshy bit is so we only take really tiny bits off. But I can't imagine your average peson who abandons dogs thinks about something like that.

As other posters have said, colour was the last thing on our minds when we visited Celia and Jimmy (though I'm sure if they had had a pink dog the kids would have insisted we take that one home!!)

That is the question I really wanted to raise...Quite difficult to understand this sort of attitude but it really happens... even very often...

Re: black greys

We have a black greyhound and he is a stunning boy - its a shame that the plain ones go un-noticed at times

Re: black greys

My gran was manager at the Milton animal home for years and she says the same. I don't know why people have an aversion to black dogs and it's such a shame. She says they were always the ones who were there the longest.

Re: black greys

The same sort of things happens to black cats... Maybe some people are superstitious and are afraid of beautiful black animals. However it is hard to believe that these days

Re: black greys

Hi Stan,
Regarding what you say, would you believe that on two occasions potential rehoming people said they didn't want a black dog because their colour frightened them?
Black dogs, beautiful as they are can be difficult to find a home for.
Celia and Jimmy.

Re: black greys

Well I know what you are saying is true. That is why they should have re-homed them to find a remedy for their phobias. That would have been a remedy if they had found in them a source of love instead of fear...

Re: black greys

I know that when we decided to look at getting a greyhound I actually never knew you could get black one's! Shows how much I knew!

We came home with our beautiful black-coated Gemma in January and although her coat was quite dull at first, it now sparkles in the sun. So many people stop us in the street to say how shiny and healthy her coat looks. Im so glad we got a black grey now, wouldnt change her for the world!
